A Letter to The Future

Organisations, as the people, are assessed by their actions and results, a sort of unofficial biography that tracks their unique trajectory.

One of the significant responsibilities of an organisation, reaching its maturity phase, is to understand when the narration of its distinctive values becomes an integral part of its responsibility towards its industry and society, more generally.

Homa today is the world leader in the cooling appliances market in the OEM/OBM segment. Moreover, our success allows us to count ourselves permanently in the top ten world production of refrigerators.

Since our inception, our competitiveness has been built on three pillars: CARE, FOOD PRESERVATION and DESIGN.

The ability to listen and be in sync with the global market gives us access to an incredible generative advantage: the nourishing encounter between our principles and those shared by most of our international partners widens our consciousness and citizenship.

This process helps us consolidate our purpose with a principle that overarches and corroborates all others: SUSTAINABILITY.

This is a natural process: SUSTAINABILITY is naturally embedded in each of the three pillars!

The facts demonstrate our commitment: to the daily challenge to design better products, more energy efficient and made with low environmental impact materials (recycled and recyclable). More durable appliances that must also be easily repaired, with readily available spare-parts!

We can tell the same story in many ways, but it is our responsibility to always find a way to share. It is clear to everybody that when something is not disclosed, it is as if it did not exist!
That is the reason WHY we share!
It is paramount that all stakeholders can deeply sense our vision and foresee our direction.

Our willingness to take the floor and influence our industry makes us committed to improving our way of communicating, trying every day to draw attention to the well-being of our planet and our responsibility to future generations.

We must also innovate ways to draw attention to themes rooted in our company's purpose.

Today we do it using a narrative trick, a letter written by an imaginary teenager: Margaret DaMunnelly, 12, lives in London with her mum, dad, and 8-year-old sibling Jake.

She is part of the generation of children who inherit a climate-changed planet.
Many of the commitments made by governments at the Cop27 in Sharm el-Sheikh refer to 2050 as the deadline for achieving their carbon neutrality goals.

By then, Margie will have just turned 40.
In the following letter, she is writing to her future self.
She expresses what that means to her and how she sees the future of our planet in her own words.

This exercise must trigger deep considerations about the planet we're leaving to our children, empathising through the eyes of a young teen.

To 40-year-old me,

I am writing this letter in the November of 2022.
I am 10 years old and live in the UK, and I wonder if that’s changed by 2050.
I have some questions and hopes about our environment for the future.

Firstly, what is the ocean situation?
There is so much plastic in the ocean!
Many sea animals are dying from eating the wrong thing or getting caught up in a piece of plastic.
Now, people are trying to save our sea animals and not do as much fishing.

Next, I wonder if all cars will be zero emission or at least very low emission by 2050 because many electric vehicles are very expensive now.
I think (and hope!) that all or most cars will stop expelling dangerous fumes into our environment since there is a lot of pollution. I hope to see blue skies!

My third paragraph is about forests.
People are cutting down the rainforest to put farms on, which releases carbon dioxide. However, many people are trying their hardest to plant new trees and create a more positive environment.
Leading on from this, what is your current opinion on zoos? Adding this to this letter sounds unusual, so let me explain.
Some animals could be majorly endangered, from losing their homes or even being poached, and some of the only animals in these species could be in zoos.
I can’t tell if this is good because they could have been held captive for their whole life and might not be able to survive in the wild. On the other hand, they could go back into the wild, reproduce and possibly keep this species alive.

Similarly, to the car subject, something better for our environment is solar panels, and they are also very expensive but much better than fossil-fueled electricity.

To conclude, I hope the next generation and the next have a sustainable and healthy future.

Margie
(Margaret DaMunnelly)
